View Full Version : Can't get my MH bulb to turn on...

I have a very simple ballast (pic below), has a transformer and a capacitor and that's it. I was doing some reading and apparently metal halide bulbs don't need a starter?
The bulb that I'm using I got from home depot, metal halide, 250W, and says it needs a M58 Ballast which is what I got, also 250W.
The problem is its not turning on and I don't know whats wrong or what to check? I put a voltmeter on the metal tab that would touch the back of the bulb, and I put the other end of the voltmeter on where the threads would screw in. Reading was around 160V. Is there anything else I can check? Also its a possibility that it was re-wired up somehow, just a F.Y.I.
When its plugged in I hear a slight hum coming from the ballast as well.
Any help is greatly appreciated on what I should do, thanks!

Is 160v a correct reading for where the bulb connects?

If you have a 160v system, you're different than most of us.

US voltages are 120v and 240v.

Could be the ballast has failed, could be the wiring is screwed up.

No, I have a 120v input (e.g. wall outlet), and a 160v output (to bulb), is this right? Or should the output be much higher?
