I was wondering as a new grower if it is possible to swap between a metal halide and a HPS bulb of the same wattage as i have read that the different bulbs are better at different stages of life.

Cheers Matt

You can use different lamps, but an HPS ballast is different than a MH ballast and you cannot use both lamps in the same luminaire.

I may be wrong, but I thought there were HPS conversion bulbs out there that can be used in an MH fixture.

Like I said..I'm not 100% sure of this...

if you run a digital ballast instead of a magnetic core/coil ballast you can interchange them. if you have the older ballast (core), you can buy conversion bulbs.

You can do this one of two ways, buy a conversion bulb as mentioned above. Or buy a ballast which supports both types, there are traditional core/coil ballasts and electronic ballasts that support this functionality. Also Its important to note that conversion bulbs are generally pretty spendy.

I agree.
I'd rather go ahead and buy the proper ballast for the second bulb.
