ph test/would this work

I have a Ferry Morse electronic soil tester.It test ph and nutrient levels. I know that this needs to be put in wet/damp soil to get a reading. Could you take the water from a hydro.sym. and put it in sand and then take a reading.or in another media and get a reading.

You should be able to just put it in some nutrient solution and it will give you a reading,no idea how accurate it will be
